
Makerere University, in Kampala, Uganda, began as a trade school in 1921, teaching Carpentry, Building and Mechanics, before being formally founded as the Uganda Technical College in 1922. From 1937 the College began to provided more advanced, post-secondary education certification and in 1949 it was granted University status, as Makerere University College, affiliated to the University College of London (UCL). In 1963 the University became independent of UCL and began awarding its own degrees as part of the 'University of East Africa' (UEA). Seven years later Makerere left the UEA and transformed into an independent Ugandan university offering both undergraduate and postgraduate courses.
