The National College of Arts (NCA), Lahore, was founded in 1876 under the name of the 'Mayo School of Industrial Arts'. John Lockwood Kipling was appointed as the first principal, serving simultaneously as the first curator of the adjoining Lahore Museum. In 1958, the school was restructured, becoming the National College of Arts, with Mian Barkat Ali as principal. Although architectural draughtsmanship had been taught in earlier decades, it wasn't until 1958 that a Department of Architecture was formally established. Degree-awarding status was awarded in 1985 and NCA opened its inaugural graduate programs in 1999.
