
The Academia Nacional de Belas-Artes was founded in Lisbon, in 1836. It was renamed as the Escola Superior de Belas-Artes de Lisboa (ESBAL) in 1950, with Architecture being one of the core programmes. A restructuring of art education in the 1970s led to the ESBAL Architecture Department being incorporated into the Faculdade de Belas-Artes dea Universidade de Lisboa.
