The first classes in Architecture were held at Harvard in 1874 but the Graduate School of Design was not formally established until 1936, when three programs of Architecture, Landscape Architecture and Urban Planning were merged, with Joseph Hudnut serving as the first Dean. In 1972 Harvard Graduate School moved from its home in Robinson Hall, Harvard YArd, to the purpose built Gund Hall, designed by alumni John Andrews.
