Hammersmith College of Art and Building was established by Francis Hawke, in 1891, as a evening school but it was taken over in 1904 by the London County Council, who provided new buildings at Lime Grove, Shepherds Bush. In the post 2nd World War period, the college ran a RIBA accredited Architecture course, as well as an Interior Design course. In 1970, the Architecture department, was to merge with Woolwich Polytechnic to form Thames Polytechnic, which in turn became the University of Greenwich in 1993.
